In this age of “technology this”, and “technology that”, it is comforting to know that there is a corner in America where tradition appears frozen in time and carefully preserved; the art of making leather that has been perfected over fifteen generations and has withstood the test of time. One that has lived through many Presidents, world wars, droughts, and recessions and is still practiced with dedication. The place where you will find it is a charming tannery called Pergamena Parchment and Leathers, which is owned and operated by the Mayer Family in New York. THOL is proud to introduce one of their leather gems to our Crafting community.  

Family History - The Meyer family has been in business continuously since 1550, and the tannery is located here in the scenic Hudson Valley of New York, USA. With a long history of crafting fine leathers, the family has honed their skills over five centuries, ensuring that every piece of leather that they produce meets their highest quality, yet retains that artisanal hand-made touch.

About the Leather - This luxurious vegetable tanned cow calf leather is a masterpiece, offering a smoothness and luxurious feel that has few to match. One of the key qualities of the leather is its medium firm temper, which provides a perfect balance between durability and comfort. Whether you're looking for a leather that will last for years or one that feels exquisite, this handmade leather is sure to exceed your expectations.

As a vegetable-tanned leather, this leather is crafted using natural tannins extracted from bark and other plant matter. This traditional method results in a leather that is not only beautiful but is also gentle on the environment. The tannery only sources raw hides from sustainable farms that care for their animals, and their leathers are a guaranteed byproduct of the food chain. You can be assured that this leather was crafted with care for both the animal and the environment and is sure to impress even your most discerning customer.

As a small batch artisanal handmade item, for large orders the lead time is 4-6 weeks, if we don’t have it already in stock. Please contact us to discuss large orders. We can do custom colors, based on your Pantone color of choice. Since these are vegetable tanned hides, freedom with colors may be limited when compared to Chrome tanned leathers.

Texture- Smooth, slightly waxy natural flat grain

Useful Notes - Artisanal quality with natural vein marks in places. Takes on a beautiful shiny patina and a slightly darker shade with use, revealing the beauty of vegetable tanned leather.
